North Island
The aptly named Bay of Plenty is all about beaches. Water lovers are spoilt for choice with dozens of beaches and estuaries for swimming, surfing, snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing.
Located between the Coromandel Peninsula and Tauranga, the old gold mining town of Waihi also offers access to rugged forests, beautiful river walks, great cycling trails and swimming spots set in bush-clad hills.
Papamoa’s endless sandy beach is made for swimming and beachcombing. Spend some energy on climbing to the top of the Papamoa Hills Regional Park, and be rewarded with extensive views over the bay to White Island, then chill out with the locals and enjoy a cold beer and fresh seafood at the friendly pubs and cafes.
Rotorua has deservedly been on the international tourist map for over 150 years with its spectacular thermal activity and warm Maori hospitality. These days it’s equally well known for adventure tourism and a range of bike trails to suit everyone from beginners to champions.

Follow Highway 30 for a spectacular drive through the lake country to the Eastern Bay of Plenty and Ohiwa Beach, gateway to the East Cape of New Zealand.
From Wellington, the inter-island car ferry cruises into Picton through a scenic wonderland of bays, islands and inlets.
Travelling down the east coast to Christchurch, you’ll pass through the Canterbury Plains, home to sheep, cattle, deer, vineyards and olive groves.
Take the road to Queenstown via Lake Tekapo and its azure waters, before turning south to Te Anau. Take your time and stop at the lookouts for breath-taking views of the Remarkables mountain range, Lake Wakatipu and the Fiordland mountains.
