of Tasmania.

East Coast, Tasmania

It’s all to do on the east coast of this superlative state. St Helens is perfectly positioned between the mountains and the sea for great scuba diving and snorkelling, hiking and world-class mountain biking trails.

After an action-packed day, why not experience the other side of Tasmania’s east coast? It’s a foodie paradise with fresh crayfish and oysters, luscious berries, nuts and cheeses, premium cold-climate wines and award-winning beers and ciders on offer.

You can’t go home without checking out the breathtaking Bay of Fires. Lonely Planet rated this 50km stretch of coastline as one of the top ten natural regions in the world! Hikers walk for days to explore the area’s distinctive orange lichen-covered granite boulders, framed by turquoise waters, giant sea kelp gardens and white sandy beaches. Swim, fish, snorkel, kayak, surf or wander.

Amazingly enough, for all its fame, you can spend a day here without seeing another person!

Travelling north from Orford, drop in at historic Triabunna to visit the World Heritage-listed convict probation station on Maria Island.

When you reach Swansea, spend some time in the town’s cafes, shops and galleries, maybe tuck into fish and chips on the waterfront. Heading up to Bicheno, be sure to stop off at some of the east coast’s most loved wineries along the way!

Further on, marvel at the outstanding natural beauty of Freycinet National Park. Visit Coles Bay, an appealing seaside community, where you can book cruises, wildlife tours, fishing charters and other great activities. Take in the Wineglass Bay lookout, before travelling up the Surf Coast to Scamander.

Pass mountains and rainforests on your way to St Helens, the gateway to world-famous Binalong Bay and the Bay of Fires. It’s a region teeming with memorable landscapes.
