Frequently asked questions about South Island NZ

What's the best time of year to visit holiday parks on the South Island of NZ?

Summer (December to February) is peak season, with long days, warm temperatures and all the long walks open. But shoulder season is genuinely worth it. Autumn brings still, golden days perfect for cycling and wine tasting. Winter means snow on the Alps and far fewer people on the Milford Sound cruise. Spring is waterfalls and wildflowers. Honestly, there's no bad time, just different versions of spectacular.

Do caravan parks on the South Island of NZ offer powered sites for large rigs?

Yes, our South Island holiday parks have powered sites suitable for caravans, motorhomes and large rigs. Site dimensions and hookup specs vary by park, so it's worth calling ahead if you're bringing something substantial. Our teams are happy to talk through what fits.

Which camping grounds on the South Island are closest to Fiordland and Milford Sound?

Our Te Anau holiday park is your best base for Fiordland. Te Anau is the gateway town for Milford Sound (a 2-hour drive on one of New Zealand's most scenic roads), Doubtful Sound, the Kepler Track and the Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Stay at least two nights, one day isn't enough.

Are South Island holiday parks generally pet-friendly?

Several of our South Island parks welcome pets. Policies vary by park and accommodation type; generally, pets are permitted on camping and powered sites but not in cabins or villas. Check the individual park page or call them before you book.

How do South Island holiday parks compare to DOC campsites for facilities and cost?

DOC campsites are basic by design, with minimal facilities, maximum scenery, and very low cost. Great if you're self-sufficient and want total immersion. Tasman Holiday Parks offer the full picture: hot showers, camp kitchens, WiFi, playgrounds, powered sites, and accommodation from campsites through to self-contained cabins and villas. Different experience, different price point, both worth doing on a South Island trip.

Which South Island holiday park is best for families with kids?

Our Christchurch and Wānaka parks are both great bases for families. Christchurch has an indoor heated pool, great group facilities, and easy access to the city. Wānaka puts you right next to the lake for swimming and biking, with wide open space for kids to run. Te Anau is perfect for older kids and teens who are up for the long walks.
