Summer (December to February) is peak season, with long days, warm temperatures and all the long walks open. But shoulder season is genuinely worth it. Autumn brings still, golden days perfect for cycling and wine tasting. Winter means snow on the Alps and far fewer people on the Milford Sound cruise. Spring is waterfalls and wildflowers. Honestly, there's no bad time, just different versions of spectacular.

Which camping grounds on the South Island are closest to Fiordland and Milford Sound?
Our Te Anau holiday park is your best base for Fiordland. Te Anau is the gateway town for Milford Sound (a 2-hour drive on one of New Zealand's most scenic roads), Doubtful Sound, the Kepler Track and the Te Anau Glowworm Caves. Stay at least two nights, one day isn't enough.
