Explore the Real side of WA: 48 hours in Ledge Point - as told by Adam & Clara.

Sometimes the best weekends aren't the ones you've spent months planning.

They're the ones where you throw a bag in the boot on Friday afternoon, point the car north and, before you've even finished your road trip playlist, the city feels like a distant memory.

That's exactly what happened for Adam and Clara.

As part of our The Real Side of WA series, we asked them to spend a weekend discovering Ledge Pointand the coastline beyond. What they found wasn't just towering sand dunes, hidden beaches and the Pinnacles.

It was a reminder that some of WA'sbest adventures begin less than two hours from home.

It starts long before you arrive

There's something about driving north from Perth.

The traffic thins. The bush begins to stretch a little wider. Grass trees replace shopping centres, white sand dunes appear beside the road and suddenly the weekend feels like it's already begun.

"About 45 minutes north, everything starts opening up,"Adam says. "The landscape changes so quickly. It's pretty amazing that after only an hour and a half it already feels like you're somewhere much more remote."

It's the kind of drive that quietly asks you to slow down before you've even unpacked the car.

A place that gives your weekend back

One of the biggest surprises wasn't what they did.

It was how much they didn't have to drive.

Staying at Tasman Holiday Parks – Ledge Point meant everything felt close enough to explore without constantly watching the clock.

"The park made such a convenient base,"Clara says. "Because it's so close to Perth, you don't lose half your weekend getting there, and once you arrive there are so many places to explore nearby."

That's the beauty of this corner of WA. You can spend the morning exploring somewhere new and still be back in time for a lazy afternoon at the park, watching the sun disappear with nowhere else you need to be.

The moment they'll be talking about for years...

Every trip has that story. The one that gets brought up long after you've unpacked.

For Adam and Clara, it happened somewhere amongst the endless white dunes of Lancelin.

Joining a guided 4WD tour with local guide Isaac took them well beyond the spots most people reach on their own.

"He genuinely loved showing people around,"Clara says. "We ended up sandboarding in places where it honestly felt like we had the whole dune system to ourselves."

Standing high above the dunes, they realised just how vast the landscape really is.

"From up there you get this incredible perspective,"Adam says."The drone footage doesn't even feel real because we're so tiny compared to everything around us."

Some places make you feel small in the very best way.

The Pinnacles, without the rush...

Like many people, they'd wondered whether the Pinnacles would feel crowded or overly touristy. Instead, they found exactly the opposite. Driving themselves through the national park meant they could stop whenever something caught their eye, take their time and enjoy stretches of road completely to themselves.

"It felt much more like exploring than sightseeing," Clara says. "We never felt rushed and could've happily spent hours there."

Adam's tip? Go early. Or stay until sunset.

Not every favourite memory comes from an iconic landmark. Sometimes it's a warm loaf of sourdough.

After hearing about the Ledge Point General Store'sfresh bread, they ordered one for the next morning.

"We picked it up while it was still warm, it sounds silly, but it genuinely became one of our favourite moments of the whole trip." 

Fresh bread. Coffee. Ocean air.

Sometimes that's all a good morning really needs.

Already planning the next trip...

If they had another weekend? They wouldn't change much. The only thing left on the list is paddling across to Lancelin Island after spotting it from the top of the dunes.

"Next time we'd love to hire kayaks and head across if the conditions were right," Adam says.

Which feels fitting. The best weekends don't finish with a checklist completely ticked off, they finish with a reason to come back.

Ledge Point isn't about racing from one attraction to the next. It's about discovering that somewhere less than two hours from Perth can still feel wonderfully removed from everyday life. It's the freedom of having the dunes almost to yourself. The smell of fresh bread on a slow morning. The road home feeling just that little bit quieter than the drive up.

As Adam puts it:

"It's an easy weekend escape with less than two hours of driving, but it feels much further away from Perth than it actually is."

And maybe that's the real side of WA.

Not how far you travel, but how quickly it reminds you to slow down.
