Spend all day exploring Te Anau then finish off with a relaxing spa and sauna

Who doesn’t love a relaxing hot tub? Especially after a full day hiking the many wonderous tracks in Te Anau. Relax in the warm water as it soothes your sore muscles. Top it off with a cold beverage in hand, followed by some time in a hot sauna and you have yourself the ultimate relaxation experience. Read on to learn more about the adventures you can have in Te Anau and how a spa and sauna is the perfect way to top off a magical day.

Te Anau is the perfect place to base yourself to explore Milford Sound

Imagine spending your day hiking and exploring one of the eighth wonders of the world, Milford Sound. Lose yourself in some of the world’s most vivid wilderness where cliffs rise from dark inky waters, mountains disappear into the clouds and waterfalls plunge from great heights. Choose from several tracks or do the whole 53.5 kilometres over four days.

Kepler Track

Another great option is Kepler Track, a 61.2-kilometre loop trail. For the adventurous type, you can complete this hike in about four days. The track will take you along beautiful ridge lines with epic views of mountains, lakes, and wilderness. It’s literally like your walking on top of the world.

For most of us, a 61.2-kilometre hike seems a little beyond our limits. Luckily, the track is broken up into sections so you can choose tracks based on your fitness level.

Routeburn Track

For the ultimate alpine adventure set off along the Routeburn Track. This track is 31 kilometres long winding through snow-capped mountains, glistening lakes, deep valleys, and past the turquoise blue waters of Routeburn River. Soak in stunning views over Mt Tutuko as you climb towards the highest peak, a whopping 1,255 metres above sea level. This hike can be completed in about three days with the option of doing several smaller tracks instead.

Te Anau Lakefront Track

Take an easy walk alongside Lake Te Anau. Gaze out over this stunning lake as you walk towards Te Anau township. This half an hour walk follows the lakeshore past the main shopping centre and the boat harbour at Bluegum Point. For a longer walk, continue for a three-hour return trip to Upukerora River. Take in beautiful scenery of Murchison Mountains and Fiordland National Park.

Lake to Lake Track – Te Anau to Manapouri

For from one gorgeous lake to another, walk from Lake Te Anau to Lake Manapouri. This is a 28-kilometre walk and just like the other tracks, there are many beautiful sights to see. Start your walk at the Department of Conservation visitor centre and head towards Waiau River until you reach the control gates to the Fiordland National Park.

Plan ahead

No matter what trail you intend on exploring, make sure you plan ahead of time. Some tracks require you to make a booking with the Department of Conservation in advance, and some require bookings for accommodation. Be mindful of seasonal restrictions when booking your trip. Finally, know your limits and make sure you have all the right gear.

Finish your day right

After a day exploring the Fiordland National Park and Lake Te Anau, you’ll no doubt be feeling sore and tired from an adventurous day. Finish the day right with a private, wooden barrel hot tub overlooking the picturesque Lake Te Anau. The lake is as still as glass mirroring the magnificent snow-capped mountains that tower from above. Feel your body and mind relax as you sink a little deeper whilst breathing in that beautiful mountain air. Feel your muscles start to relax and finish your restoration session with some time in a Scandinavian inspired barrel sauna.

The heat from the sauna helps to relax the body further. It can improve circulation promoting the release of endorphins leaving you feeling relaxed, happy, and glowing from head to toe. It’s great for the body and mind to sit in a calm and quiet environment restoring your body and soul.
